The details vary by feature, but the public assistants follow the same engineering principle: deterministic systems select and check the evidence; the language model writes the response.
Question
A visitor submits a natural-language question.
Retrieval
Relevant portfolio records or photographs are retrieved.
Evidence
A limited, feature-specific evidence set is assembled.
Generation
Claude produces a structured answer from that context.
Validation
Output and evidence references pass feature-specific checks.
Answer
The response and available supporting evidence are shown.
The Engineering Knowledge Base lets visitors ask about my experience and engineering approach. It retrieves documented projects, decisions and working-style evidence before generating an answer.
The Photography Assistant interprets natural-language questions, retrieves relevant published photographs and answers from stored photo metadata. AI-assisted enrichment is also used in the admin workflow to derive structured photo metadata and descriptions; published results remain part of reviewed portfolio content.
Answers are designed around retrieved portfolio evidence, not solely around a model's general knowledge. The Engineering assistant exposes supporting evidence and provenance where available.
The Photography Assistant builds a bounded evidence pack, exposes the supporting photographs and applies deterministic checks to citations, structured relationship claims and evaluation evidence before returning an answer.
AI systems can make mistakes, misunderstand questions or produce incomplete responses. Generated answers are an interface for exploring this portfolio, not an authoritative source.
The underlying portfolio content and referenced evidence remain authoritative for information about my experience and projects.
Normal portfolio pages and published engineering content are authored or reviewed portfolio content. Interactive assistant responses are generated dynamically and identified in their interfaces as AI-generated.
When you use an interactive AI feature, the text you submit is sent to external service providers so that it can be answered. They do different jobs, and not every feature uses all of them.
Anthropic's Claude service writes the answers. It receives your question together with the limited portfolio context selected for it. The Engineering Knowledge Base and the Photography Assistant both use it; photo search on its own does not.
OpenAI is used to find relevant material, not to write answers. Your query is converted into a numerical form so that related portfolio records and photographs can be matched by meaning.
Cohere is used only in the photography features, and only for some queries, to re-order or interpret photo results. Where results are re-ordered, it also receives short text descriptions of the candidate photographs, drawn from their stored details.
Features that start from a photograph you are already viewing — such as explaining why photographs are related — work from the selected photographs rather than from text you type. This page does not make a claim about how long these providers retain what they receive, beyond what can be established from this repository and the applicable provider terms.
Submitted questions are also stored on this site itself, so that the assistants can be reviewed and improved. That record keeps the question, how it was answered and how long it took — and nothing that identifies you: no IP address, no cookie, no account, and nothing that links two questions to the same person. Stored questions are deleted automatically after 90 days.
